The AHERA Management Plan is available for review in the Crawford County R-II superintendent’s office. This plan contains the location and condition of known asbestos in school buildings.

Families who want to home-school their children need to provide some information for the local public school district in order to avoid misunderstandings. They should file a “home-schooling declaration” with either the superintendent’s office or the county recorder of deeds.

The declaration must state the following: 1) name and age of each child attending the home school 2) the address and telephone number of the home school 3) the name of each person teaching in the home school 4) the name, address, and signature of each person making the declaration of enrollment.

If families file these letters by September 1st annually, they have clearly stated their intent. However, if families don’t file the letter annually, school officials don’t know whether the family has moved or is still home-schooling. The home-schooling declarations prevent the school from making erroneous reports of educational neglect.

Families may also file this declaration with the county recorder of deeds, who is allowed to charge a small fee for the service. The school district does not charge a fee.

The Crawford County R-II School District operates under the procedure of not making student information available unless permission is granted by parents, or as is provided in Section 438 of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, as amended by S.J. Resolution 40; 20 U.S. Code 1232g. There is certain directory-type information that generally would not be considered harmful or an invasion of privacy if disclosed. The district designates the following as directory information:

Students in Pre-K through twelfth grade: Student’s name; parent’s name; date and place of birth; grade level; bus assignment; enrollment status (e.g., full or part-time); participation in school-based activities and sports; weight and height of members of athletic teams; dates of attendance; honors and awards; artwork or coursework displayed by the district; most recent previous school attended; and photographs, videotapes, digital images, and recorded sound unless such photographs, videotapes, digital images and recorded sound would be considered harmful or an invasion of privacy.

In the event that parents do not wish the directory information released, parents should immediately contact the building principal that their child attends.

The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (Section 9528) passed certain new requirements with respect to Armed Forces recruiter access to students and student recruiting information.

Duty to provide information to military recruiters: Unless the parent requests otherwise, the school district must provide, upon request by military recruiters, access to high school students’ names, addresses, and telephone listings.

Consent: The high school student (if 18 years old) or the parent of the student may request that the student’s name, address, and telephone listing not be released to military recruiters.

Access to students: Each district shall provide military recruiters the same access to high school students as it provides (in general) to higher education institutions, community colleges, and prospective employers.

Effective August, 2002, Crawford County R-II Schools elected to be a smoke-free district with the exception of designated areas during extracurricular activities.
