Students in Earth Science created an edible aquifer yesterday. They used food to model groundwater systems, teaching about geology, water flow, and contamination. Layers of sweets (gravel), soda (water), ice cream (clay confining layer), and sprinkles (topsoil) in a clear cup, demonstrated how pollutants (food coloring) can seep into drinking water sources. Students built the layers, observed contamination, and then were able to eat their models, understanding real-world water issues through a fun, tasty simulation.
